Charlotte Brown-Williams, a local attorney filed on February 21, 2008 to run for District Court Judge in the 26th Judicial District. Ms. Brown-Williams, with 17 years of legal experience, says she believes that her many years of representing clients in criminal, family and juvenile court prepared her for the rigors of serving as a district court judge. Known by her colleagues as a caring and compassionate person who often crafted creative punishments to change lives, pledges to be fair and impartial, and to show respect to all persons who come into the Mecklenburg County courts.
Ms. Brown-Williams has experience in traffic, criminal, civil, family, trusts and estates, personal injury and juvenile cases. She has corporate experience and has served as general counsel to Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. She has handled hundreds of misdemeanors and felonies, child custody, paternity, child support, divorce and alimony cases. She represented the North Carolina Child Support Enforcement Agency for Anson and Richmond counties establishing paternity, child support and enforcement. As an attorney for the Department of Social Services in Iredell County, she handled abuse, neglect and dependency cases and brought permanency to the lives of many children. She has great empathy for all litigants, and hopes as a judge, her decisions will shape and have a positive impact on lives.
Charlotte Brown-Williams is also a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, served on the Judicial Council and is a board member of Camp Dorothy Walls Conference and Retreat Center, Incorporated. She also served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, the editorial board of the N. C. Academy of Trial Lawyers, and board of governors for the N. C. Association of Black Lawyers.
Charlotte Brown-Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from City University of New York (York College), a Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law, and a Master’s in Divinity from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC. She is married to Jimmy Williams, who retired from the Westchester County District Attorney’s office. She has three grown children and seven grandchildren.
